Local know-how
Dumpster rental in Memphis: what locals need to know
Memphis sees steady rehab and investor activity, and storms bring roof and tree cleanups.
Suburbs to the east and south keep growing.
Why the Mid-South keeps dumpsters busy
Memphis has a large stock of older homes – bungalows and Tudor revivals in Midtown and Cooper-Young, mid-century ranches in Whitehaven and Raleigh – along with growing suburbs such as Collierville, Germantown, Bartlett, Arlington and, across the state line, Southaven and Olive Branch in DeSoto County, Mississippi. Rehabs of investment properties, estate cleanouts, roof replacements and storm cleanup keep containers busy.
Memphis will not remove construction debris
Memphis city ordinance prohibits city collection of dirt, brick, rock, concrete, scrap, lumber, roofing, fencing materials, carpet or any other debris generated by construction or demolition. Contractors who create waste are required by ordinance to remove it when they finish the work.
The city’s Outside the Cart service, twice a month on your regular collection day, covers yard debris beyond two bags and bulky household items such as furniture and tree limbs. Tree debris must be cut to under five feet long or 13 inches in diameter and kept separate from other items.
Street placement
A container on your driveway usually needs no permit. Street placement in the City of Memphis requires approval from the city; the provider can tell you what applies. Germantown, Collierville, Bartlett and the Mississippi suburbs have their own rules, and many subdivisions have HOA limits on containers.
Typical dumpster rental costs in Memphis
| Item | Typical range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. average, one rental | $384 (most people pay $294–$480) | Angi |
| Rental by the day / week / month | $40–$100 / $350–$550 / $500–$1,200 | Angi |
These are published cost figures for orientation only, not quotes. The provider you are connected with confirms size, rental days, weight allowance and price before delivery. Figures were checked in September 2026.
Angi does not publish a separate Memphis average; the national figures are a starting point.
Storms and big trees
The Mid-South sees severe spring thunderstorms, straight-line winds, occasional tornadoes and ice storms. Mature oaks and other big trees are part of Memphis neighborhoods – and after storms, limbs and trunks fill containers quickly. Tree debris is heavy; ask about the weight allowance, or use the city’s Outside the Cart service for smaller amounts. See yard waste and tree debris.
Rehabbing older Memphis homes
Many Memphis homes were built before 1978. Contractors disturbing painted surfaces must follow the EPA’s lead-safe work rules, and old floor tiles, siding and pipe insulation can contain asbestos – test before demolition. Plaster, brick and old roofing are heavy, so size containers by weight. For investors rehabbing several houses, one provider with steady pricing saves time. See dumpsters for landlords.
Choosing a size for Memphis projects
- Whole-house rehab: 20 to 30 yards, often with swaps.
- Estate cleanout: 20 to 30 yards. See our estate cleanout checklist.
- Roof replacement: 10 to 20 yards.
- Fence replacement: see shed and fence removal.
Before you book in the Mid-South
- Contractor debris is the contractor’s job by ordinance – ask your contractor whether the container is in their price.
- Tennessee or Mississippi? Rules differ across the state line.
- Old appliances: see appliance disposal.
- Summer heat: plan loading for the morning.
Planning a Memphis rehab, step by step
- Walk the house and list what comes out: plaster, flooring, cabinets, roofing, appliances and contents.
- Test older materials for lead and asbestos before demolition.
- Decide who handles debris. If a contractor does the work, city ordinance makes them responsible for removing it – clarify whether the container is in their bid.
- Sort contents first. Furniture and household items can go to donation or the city’s Outside the Cart service; construction debris goes into the container.
- Schedule swaps so the crew never waits for an empty container.
For investors with several properties, the same provider and standard sizes make each job easier to price.
